The Division also oversees the operations of the Tobago Hospitality and Tourism Institute (THTI) , Tobago Library Services and Tobago Information Technology Limited.
The Student Support Services Unit is a vital part of comprehensive school programme success. It offers prevention, intervention, transition and follow-up services for students and families. Direct Services are provided through education, counselling, consultation and individual assessment. The School Nutrition Unit is responsible for identifying, monitoring and evaluating the nutritional needs of students. It also coordinates the preparation and distribution of meals to students in early childhood, primary and secondary institutions.
In the early seventies, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago embarked on an initiative to create a large scale School Feeding Programme which provided meals to all students. Today, the Division of Education, Research and Technology, Tobago House of Assembly, continues to satisfy the nutritional needs of students through the operations of its School Nutrition Unit. The Research Unit satisfies the decision-making and information needs of policymakers, administrators, educators and other stakeholders, by providing them with research-based data and information. The Unit is involved in all initiatives undertaken by the Division aimed at strengthening the planning, management and implementation capability, in its thrust for increased efficiency and effectiveness. The Examinations Unit is responsible for coordinating the registration and administration of national, regional and international examinations.
National
Primary Level
The Sport in Education Unit is mandated to facilitate the participation of primary schools in national sporting programmes and competitions. The Unit also coordinates events to prepare student athletes to compete at national and regional levels. Primary schools in Tobago currently engage in five (5) sporting disciplines. School supervision in Trinidad and Tobago started in the 1850’s when a school inspection system was first established in the fledgling government-organized education system in the then British colonies. The establishment of school inspection, even then, implied a degree of decentralization of decision-making and an attempt to maintain standards and accountability in the school system.
The Multicultural Education Unit, through its varied programmes and activities, impacts the lives of children and young people in Tobago from early childhood to tertiary level education. The primary function of the Curriculum Planning and Development Unit (CPDU) is to manage the curriculum process at all levels of the education system. This process includes curriculum design, development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and review. Ensuring a high standard of education in Tobago through the development, modification, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of curricula that are relevant, responsive and effective. The Department of Advanced Training and Advisory Services (DATAS) facilitates the Human Capital Development Policy for Tobago through the Tobago House of Assembly’s (THA) Financial Assistance Programme. DATAS has the responsibility for the administration of bursaries, grants and scholarships to residents of Tobago who wish to pursue or are pursuing tertiary /post-secondary education.
The Transportation Unit facilitates the movement of staff members of the Division of Education, Skills and Innovation as well as equipment and other resources. It also provides transportation for the School for the Deaf, Language and Hearing Impaired, Happy Haven and Tobago Library Services. Visit Department page to learn more
The Project Implementation Unit (PIU) is a team of technical Officers who plan, set project targets, monitor and evaluate repair works, and maintain and ensure standards for project management in all public schools in Tobago. The Unit comprises Project Officers, an Engineering Consultant and Business Operations Assistants, supervised by a Project Manager. Visit Department page to learn more
The Human Resource Management (HRM) Unit is responsible for ensuring that the Division has the staff complement required for its effective functioning. The Unit therefore engages in the recruitment and selection of staff. Other related duties include: leave administration, performance appraisals and the processing of rewards and benefits. The Unit is focused on improving the knowledge and understanding of OSH regulations and improve the safety culture at the Division. An OSH Committee was established to engender participation in OSH related matters and compliance with the OSH Act. The areas of OSH management include electrical safety, health safety, welfare, personal protective equipment (PPE), fire safety and OSH record. Visit Department page to learn more
The Procurement Unit is responsible for managing the acquisition of goods and services for the Division, Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) centres, primary schools, secondary schools and trade centres. Its operations are guided by The Public Procurement and Disposal of Property Act 2015.
The Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Unit manages the technological development of the Division. The Unit services all other Units of the Division, Tobago Library Services, all schools (ECCE, primary and secondary) and other stakeholders. Vision: To collaborate with all Units and stakeholders of the Division to identify technological challenges and provide solutions for the re-engineering and automation of processes to realize greater efficiency. The Communications Unit is responsible for managing and coordinating the organization’s internal and external communications.
